Elden Ring Cross-Play Explained
Before we get to the answer to whether Elden Ring has cross-platform multiplayer or not, let’s take a quick look at what cross-play means for those who may be unaware.

There are three cross features in gaming. The first and most important one is cross-play, which refers to whether a game can be played online with your friends regardless of what platform everyone is on.
The second is cross-progression, which means that the game shares progress between different platforms.
And the third and last one that we have is cross-generation multiplayer, which means that you can play with your friends on different consoles as long as they are under the same brand. For example, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
With that out of the way, let’s jump to the answer to the main question.
Is Elden Ring Cross-Play?
Elden Ring is currently available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.
Unfortunately, Elden Ring does not feature cross-platform multiplayer on any platform. If you play the game on a PlayStation 5, you cannot play with someone on a PC.
On the other hand, Elden Ring features cross-generation multiplayer since you can play co-op with someone on a PlayStation 5 while playing the game on a PlayStation 4 yourself. The same applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S too.
The game’s PlayStation 4 version runs on the PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility, but you can still play the cross-gen multiplayer of Elden Ring if you’re running the PS5 version on the console rather than using backward compatibility.
Lastly, the game does not feature cross-progression of any kind. So, your progress will be limited to the one platform that you play on.
Is Elden Ring Cross-Platform between PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, and PC?
Elden Ring does not have cross-play between the PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, and PC platforms. The same applies to other consoles under these brands, such as the PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S.
Can you play the PS4 version of Elden Ring on a PS5?
Yes, Elden Ring’s PS4 version runs on the PS5 and it even has a better framerate than the native PS5 version. However, the game does exist on the PS5 separately too and features cross-gen multiplayer.
Is Elden Ring coming to Nintendo Switch?
Elden Ring is not coming to the Nintendo Switch. It’s a large open-world game with high-end graphics, which the Nintendo Switch simply can’t handle.
We might see a spin-off of the Dark Souls franchise on the Nintendo Switch someday, but Elden Ring is never coming to the platform.
