Is Destiny 2 Cross-Platform? (PC, PS4, PS5, XBOX, Switch)

is destiny 2 cross platform

While the first Destiny game was a decent experience, no one expected the sequel to take the world of online gaming by storm. It quickly became one of the most beloved multiplayer first-person shooters and despite the fact that it came out several years ago, it still has a consistent player base that keeps increasing with time.

That is, of course, partially due to the fact the game was made free-to-play after originally being a paid product – and it also receives new expansions every now and then which fix the game’s problems and add a lot of new content.

When a game like Destiny 2 +is this successful and is on multiple platforms, it’s only natural that people want the ability to be able to play the game with all of their friends no matter what device they’re on.

After all, people do not buy the same platform in 2021 and console players are becoming more open to PC, while PC players are trying out consoles too these days.

It’s beneficial for video games to have cross-platform multiplayer since it encourages sales through community recommendations, while it’s incredibly accessible for gamers too.

So, the obvious question comes up – is Destiny 2 cross-platform? Let’s dig into the official sources and find our answer.

Destiny 2 Cross-Play Explained

Before we answer our question, it’s important to briefly explain what cross-play is all about for those who might not be aware of what this term is supposed to mean.

Cross-play is not something that we heard in the previous generation of gaming, but it’s becoming more and more prevalent since the eighth generation of consoles and onwards. What it essentially means is that cross-platform multiplayer grants gamers the ability to play the same game on different platforms – but together.

This means that if someone is on a PlayStation 4, they would still be able to play online with their friends on a PC. The only catch is that they’re all up to date on the latest version, of course.

Additionally, we also have the term cross-progression which refers to the capability of logging into any device, which can be a computer or a console – and having your progress carried on between the different hardware. Unlike cross-play, this is a far less common thing to find.

Last but not least – there are also limited versions of cross-play and cross-progression capabilities, which are not called anything different but essentially only function properly between specific ports. But mostly, if a company implements these features, they are limitless.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s answer the initial question immediately!

Is Destiny 2 Cross-Play?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. At this very moment, Destiny 2 is not a cross-platform video game. That means if you play on PC, you won’t be able to play with your friends on gaming consoles. And if you play on a gaming console, then you won’t be able to play with your friends on a PC.

However, all hope is not lost as according to Bungie, the development team is hard at work in terms of implementing a bunch of new things to the game, which starts from 2021 and also gives us a peek into 2022 plans.

Within the announcement, it was stated that in Fall 2021, Season 15 of Destiny 2 will finally implement Cross-play to the game – which means that every single player will be able to game with their friends no matter what device that they’re in on.

This, of course, raises a question regarding the PvP Crucible mode of the game as a keyboard and mouse automatically give most players an advantage compared to those on a controller, since the reactions are slower for them.

But Bungie already has plans to counter that too, saying that PC players won’t be matched with console players and the only way console players would be fighting those on PC is if they willingly join their friends’ parties who are playing on a PC.

Is Destiny 2 Cross-Play release date out?
