However, what people may have not expected was that the company was not willing to let go of the ‘games as a service’ model and gave it another shot – and that’s what brings us to Outriders.
The game quickly made headlines thanks to its incredibly intense co-op gameplay and addictive role-playing elements that players loved as soon as they got their hands on it. It’s certainly on its way to becoming one of the most successful cooperative shooters in 2021 and it’s a great example of how you can win over an audience if the game is entertaining.

2. Warframe

Warframe is most certainly similar to Outriders and Destiny 2 in many ways, but there is something that sets it apart in a very good way from those games. You do have characters who can shoot and great co-op gameplay – but it has far more variety than you can imagine in general. All of the game’s unique characters have their own abilities, and not everyone has guns as melee is a relevant option to choose too.

3. Borderlands (franchise)

The very first Borderlands games are something that is still very fun to play in 2021 and feels modern enough in terms of gameplay. And then we had three sequels and a spin-off, which all expanded on the lore and gameplay, making it bigger and better.

Some of the games on this list are even inspired by Dark Souls despite being shooters, such as Remnant: From the Ashes to name just one. All in all, the game is going to keep you hooked on the edge of your seat and the only catch is the difference in combat.
6. The Division 2
The first game in The Division series was quite divisive, as some people enjoyed it a lot while others had less-than-favorable things to say about it. However, Ubisoft learned where the game’s shortcomings lied and expanded on these issues in the sequel – offering players a fleshed out co-operative experience.
There are many missions and challenges to be completed, and both the co-op and PvP modes are very fun to play. And of course, we have the role-playing elements intact too.
7. Killing Floor 2

Zombie games aren’t as big anymore as a genre as they once were – but that doesn’t mean that a good game won’t still find success in the industry. Expanding immensely on the first game, Killing Floor 2 is bigger and better in every single way. You can play by yourself or play in co-op, and you’ll have tons of fun one way or another.
Not only that, but you can even play as the enemy in PvP and see if you can kill your human friends before they kill you! While it’s not a conventional role-playing game, it does have customization in aspects and you can manage your inventory based on your money and situations too.
8. Monster Hunter (franchise)
Available On: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch.
Monster Hunter is very similar to Outriders, but the difference here is that you fight giant monsters for a living rather than face off other players or armies of AI enemies. However, unlike Dark Souls, this game does not limit you to sword fighting. With over a dozen unique weapons and sub-types to choose from, you can play with guns, grenade launchers, swords, spears, and even shields.
It’s an excellent game to play cooperatively with your friends and there’s one available on almost every platform.
9. Marvel’s Avengers
Available On: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X.
Sure, the game did not manage to live up to the expectations of most people since it’s based on the characters we know and love from the MCU – but it’s still a very enjoyable game if you go in with lower standards. The co-operative campaign is fairly fun to play through and offers a solid storyline, while the endgame, although a bit repetitive, still has hundreds of hours’ worth of content to play through.
And due to the game’s lack of success, the developers have been trying to improve it over time too which even saw a few players giving the ambitious title another chance. Based on what character you choose, there’s a decent variation within the gameplay too.
10. GTFO
Available On: PC.
GTFO is a first-person shooter that takes the cooperative level to a whole new experience thanks to its atmospheric gameplay and horror elements that are implemented in a challenging way. You and your friends are imprisoned within a facility and you have to indulge in role-playing elements, strategy, stealth, and all-out action based on how you wish to play the game.
It’s a unique concept that hadn’t been executed so perfectly before, and it’s a great variation to games like Outriders if you’re looking to keep things fresh.
