Is Fallout 76 Cross-Platform? (PC, PS4, XBOX, PS5)

fallout 76 cross-platform

While hundreds of video games come and go, Fallout has always been a franchise that has its own identity and appeals to a large part of the role-playing video games crowd.

While the first two games were more of a niche experience, the series came as close to the mainstream as possible while still appeasing hardcore gamers with the much-anticipated release of Fallout 3 and everything that followed.

It was only a matter of time before the perfected formula of the series was turned into a multiplayer experience and that’s what brought us to Fallout 76.

While the game had a very rocky launch that still managed to gain a lot of subscribers, it was improved with time and won over many people who thought the game was doomed to fail – which is a story similar to No Man’s Sky.

Naturally, gamers don’t want to buy gaming-specific platforms to play with their friends in 2021 anymore because cross-play capabilities are more common than ever.

After all, not only is it a great convenience for the players, it helps the game itself grow too since people are able to convince their friends to buy the game rather than move to a completely different gaming device.

Thus, it brings us to the big question – does Fallout 76 have cross-platform multiplayer or not? Let’s dig right into the answer!

Fallout 76 Cross-Play Explained

If you’re here to see whether Fallout 76 has cross-platform multiplayer or not but aren’t sure about what this means – let’s take a moment to explain the entire concept of cross-capabilities in video games. For those who already knew – move on to the next segment for your answers!

There are three different types of cross features in video games. The first one is the most common feature called cross-play which essentially means that any player can partake in multiplayer matches with their friends irrespective of what gaming platform they’re on.

For example, someone on a PlayStation 4 should be able to play with their friends on an Xbox One and Nintendo Switch as long as their game is updated to the latest version.

The second one is cross-progression which refers to the ability to maintain the same progress on two different platforms. For example, if you were at level 20 in a game on a PlayStation 4 and then logged your account on an Xbox, you shouldn’t have to start over and instead start from the same place.

Finally, the cross-generation feature refers to the ability to play the game on different consoles in multiplayer under the same brand. For example, someone on a PlayStation 4 should be able to with someone on a PlayStation 5 without any extra steps required.

Now that we have these important bits of information out of the way, let’s talk about the main question.

Is Fallout 76 Cross-Play?

Fallout 76 is currently available on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It can also be played on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X & S thanks to the backward compatibility, providing players with enhanced frame rates and load times.

Unfortunately, Fallout 76 does not have cross-platform multiplayer and each player is limited to playing with those who are gaming on their own gaming brand. For example, PlayStation 4 players cannot play with anyone with an Xbox One player.

Furthermore, the game does not feature cross-progression either. It only features cross-generation capabilities thanks to the backward compatibility with the game of the 9th generation of consoles – but this might change when an official next-gen version is released.

There is no word on if Fallout 76 will ever have cross-play multiplayer but it might be added between the Microsoft Store version of the PC port and Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S because of the fact that Bethesda is now owned by Microsoft.

And due to that very fact, the chances of having cross-play with the PlayStation family of consoles are even less likely.

Is Fallout 76 Cross-Platform between PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X?

Fallout 76 does not have cross-play at the moment between any of the consoles that it’s on, or even the computer versions. It only vaguely features cross-generation multiplayer between the eighth and ninth generation of consoles due to legacy compatibility.

Is Fallout 76 coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?

Fallout 76 has not yet been released on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X & S consoles officially – but a release might be on its way sometime in the near future. However, you can play Fallout 76 on PS5 and Xbox Series X through legacy backward compatibility, which allows you to have faster frame rates and better load times.
