The Fallout franchise is all post-apocalyptic wastelands and traveling through deserted hostile environments can be a very lonely task. Fortunately, Fallout 4 allows players to find and befriend companions who will travel and fight alongside them.
And some of them can be romanced and even married since this is an RPG after all.
The companions are not just about their appearance and personalities, though, as they have additional abilities that make them different from each other.
And naturally, it gets hard to know which companions to keep by your side when the game offers you so many different options.

1. Dogmeat
Dogmeat is the first companion that you meet in Fallout 4 and is kind of a fan favorite.
Why, you ask? He’s a dog. A loyal dog accompanying you in a lawless land, what more can you ask for? But if you want to talk about the actual abilities besides that – if you get the right perks from the skill tree, he can attack enemies for you.
While he’s not too helpful so to speak in fighting enemies for you, he does incapacitate them enough to give you an advantage. He also finds random items for the player every once in a while, which can be very helpful in an RPG game like Fallout.
2. Curie
Curie originally comes to you in a robotic form that is not capable of too much of anything besides medical attention.
She heals you by 100 pints every time your health drops below 10 and you can give her a synthetic body to improve her properties.
Once in the human form, she is one of the strongest companions in the game and can damage enemies like a tank. And this is still coupled with her medical abilities from her previous form – so at the end of the day, you have a kind of an all-rounder companion if you keep Curie by your side.
3. Nick Valentine
Nick Valentine is a robotic detective that is extremely useful when it comes to hacking terminals and he also knows how to get around most places thanks to his extensive knowledge of the land.
Not only that, he has unique combat skills that are very useful in the later parts of the game too if you make strategic use of them.
If you’re looking for a tank or a health-boosting companion, then of course, this isn’t the one for you. But his stealthy ways are very useful for players who like to take things a bit safe.
4. Strong
When a guy has ‘Strong’ in their name, you know that strength is going to be their forté. Strong’s main ability besides brute strength is that he can use heavy weapons, and he gains additional damage if your health drops below 25%.
Despite being a mutant, he’s a kind person and that’s actually a part of his story since you find him when he’s about to be killed by the other mutants who are very aggressive as usual.
5. Piper Wright
If you are a player who likes to level up as fast as possible, then Piper Wright is the companion you should go for. By using her, you gain twice the experience when persuading NPCs in the game even if you can’t reach the maximum affinity.
While she’s not too good with combat, her personality makes up for it. No, really. She is a diehard journalist who often gets in trouble for speaking the truth, which is a rare quality to have in a wasteland.
6. Paladin Danse
If you’re looking for a soldier who will act like your brother-in-arms throughout the entire game, then Paladin is the companion best suited for you.
He’s great offensively if you’re dealing with superhuman and non-human enemies and can deal a large amount of damage that is rivaled by a few others.
And to make things even better, you don’t even have to try too hard to unlock him as he becomes available as soon as you join the Brotherhood.
7. Preston Garvey
You must be familiar with Preston since he was very famous at one point through internet memes due to his persistency with asking you to help random settlements of the Brotherhood of Steel.
He’s a senior soldier who tries his best to maintain peace within the wasteland and his perk is extremely useful for fighting groups of enemies.
Once activated, the damage you deal will gain a 20% boost, and so will the resistance of the damage that you receive. If you find yourself unable to clear crowded areas in the game, you should definitely get Preston on your side!
8. MacCready
Often find yourself out of ammo and unable to figure out what to do with that problem? MacCready is the solution.
As a companion, he randomly finds and gifts the player ammo and fusion cores, and he has a pretty cool personality to have around you too. With the unlock of a specific perk, he even gains a 20% chance of getting headshots in V.A.T.S, which is a great ability to have on top of his initial usefulness.
If you’re a good guy, he’s kind of a conflicted voice to have and if you’re a bad guy, you’d fit right in with him. It’s fun to see how many different routes you can go down in this game.
9. Cait
Cait is for gamers who cannot play by the rules and constantly feel the need to mix up their playstyles based on the solution. If you’ve ever wanted to go Rambo in a stealth situation, then you’ll perfectly fit her energy.
She can pick any lock that the player can find and her perk allows the player’s AP to recover much faster than usual once they’re low on health. Her actions can be a bit inconsistent, but it’s surely part of the fun.
10. Deacon
Deacon is a complicated companion to have by your side and we recommend taking him around with you if you want a bit of a dynamic personality to have by your side, or just want to experience something new on a replay of the game.
If you like playing the game a bit more strategically, then he’s pretty useful to have around thanks to his stealth skills.
He’s a kind of a spy and one of his perks boost your sneak damage by 20% and the duration of stealth boys by 40%. On top of that, he’s a part of the Railroad faction so it’s a nice way to fit in better with them too if you want to team up with them.
His personality is a very interesting one to witness since he even implies that the stories he tells you about himself are most likely made up.
