League of Legends is one of the largest MOBAs in existence and continues to have a massive player base alongside an active esports scene even in 2022, despite the fact that it was originally released over a decade ago.
Originally released on only two platforms, the game saw a mobile release in 2020 under the title of League of Legends: Wild Rift for the Android and iOS platforms, The ARAM mode and champions like Xerath are also worth mentioning.

After all, no one in 2022 wants to buy different hardware just to play a game with their friends, as they should be able to play it regardless of their platform as long as everyone has the same version.

League of Legends Cross-Play Explained
We’re going to answer the big question – but let’s take a moment to explain what cross-play and other cross functions in gaming are for those who might be unaware. If you already know what all of these things mean, skip to the next segment for your answers!
In total, there are three types of cross functionalities to be found in modern-day video games. The first and most important one is cross-platform multiplayer, which means that gamers should be able to play online with their friends irrespective of what platform they’re on.
For example, someone on an Xbox One should be able to play the game with their friends on a PlayStation 4 or PC as long as they’re on the same version of the game.
The second thing is cross-progression, which refers to the ability to have the same progress in a game across multiple platforms. For example, if you unlock a certain outfit or reach a certain level in a video on a PC, you should be able to have all of that carried over onto the PlayStation 4 version of the game instead of having to start over.
On the third and last number, we have cross-generation multiplayer, which means that players on two different consoles under the same brand can play online multiplayer with each other. For example, someone on a PlayStation 4 can play the game with someone on a PlayStation 5 – but not with someone on an Xbox.
Now that we have this important piece of information out of the way, let’s go back on track and answer the million-dollar question of whether LoL has cross-play or not.
Is League of Legends: Wild Rift Cross-Play?
League of Legends is available on the PC and Mac OS X platforms. Additionally, League of Legends: Wild Rift is available on the Android and iOS platforms – with a console release intended for the near future.
League of Legends has very limited cross-play as you can play the PC version with the OS X version. However, players on League of Legends: Wild Rift who are on Android or iOS cannot play with their friends on the PC and OS X platforms.
The mobile players, similar to the computer versions, can play League of Legends: Wild Rift together with their friends on both Android and iOS. It’s not completely confirmed if the console version of the game will have cross-play with the mobile versions or not – but it seems to be the most likely scenario to happen.
The game does not have cross-progression or cross-generation multiplayer either.
Is League of Legends coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?
League of Legends: Wild Rift will be getting released on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms. However, a release date is not confirmed yet.
