The Best Sword Enchantments for Minecraft

best sword enchantments in minecraft

Minecraft is one of the most customizable games on the planet and every single mechanic can be optional based on how you choose to play it. If you do resort to combat though, you will come to know very fast that you can use almost anything in the game as a weapon – which even includes bare fists.

But just because you ‘can’ do something doesn’t mean it’s the right way to approach a situation – and the game allows you to craft better tools to fight with. Swords are, of course, a no-brainer and help you fight large numbers of enemies with ease.

With many different types of swords that you can obtain in the game, the strongest one is the Diamond Sword and it has some of the highest damage a single weapon can deal with enemies in the game. That’s not where it stops, however, and you can apply ‘enchantments’ to your swords to make them even stronger and provide more durability.

Best Minecraft Sword Enchantments Ranked

So, what are the best sword enchantments in Minecraft? Here they are ranked from worst to best:

10. Knockback

As the name implies, Knockback can push your opponents away from you which is extremely useful to have as a skill if you’re overcrowded and need some safe space in order to get out alive.

It won’t be much use outside of this, though, and is especially bad for PvP unless you just want to have some fun.

9. Curse of Vanishing

This enchantment is mainly useful for PvP if you’re not a fan of being looted after your death. Any item that you were wielding while using this enchantment on your sword will disappear and not drop with your death, and your opponents won’t have anything to pick up after you’re gone.

8. Bane of Arthropods

Hate creatures such as spiders and other creepy crawlers that come in the Arthropods category? Then this is the enchantment for you. It’s extremely useful for killing large numbers of arthropod enemies in Minecraft and you still retain the high damage potential of your swords otherwise.

One of the best ways to use this enchantment is to farm for XP points and loots by going into arthropod territories and clearing out as many mobs as you can.

7. Smite

The Smite enchantment is particularly meant for enemy types such as skeletons and zombies – so if you have to deal with the undead this is going to be the ability you need to go for.

Like Bane of Arthropods, this enchantment is best used if you have to clear out undead territories for XP farming and looting.

6. Fire Aspect

Fire Aspect is a powerful enchantment in general as it sets everything you attack with it on fire, so if you’re ever in the mood for some pyro action then this is the enchantment to go for.

However, one of the less-talked-about advantages this enchantment has is the fact the animals killed while having Fire Aspect equipped are cooked immediately – which saves up on time and fuel.

5. Sweeping Edge

Sweeping Edge is a bit of a strategic sword enchantment to use, as it can be both useful and useless depending on your overall situation. What it does is add additional damage to your sweep attacks, which are the attacks that you inflict while standing and having a recharge meter at over 84.8% – so it’s very specific for it to happen.

Nothing wrong with having extra power on the sweep attacks, but it’s the fact you won’t have advantages in anything else that can make it a bad enchantment to use. But it’s a powerhouse if you use it right.

4. Looting

Looting is very straightforward – the amount of loot that your enemies will drop after being killed will increase by a good margin, while the XP orbs will still drop in the same way.

Additionally, the enchantment also increases the chances of rare loot to appear which is very useful if you’re looking for certain items which can only be obtained as rare/less common loot.

3. Mending

Minecraft Enchanted Sword

Mending is easily one of the strongest enchantments in the game because it provides more durability to the swords you apply it to. The XP orbs you will collect after killing enemies will act as durability regeneration and slowly increase the number of times you can use your sword overall.

The average number of how many times a Diamond Sword is useable before it breaks is 1562, so if you’re someone who wants to bypass that, this enchantment is the way to do it.

2. Sharpness

Sharpness can be called the ‘tank’ sword enchantment, as its main advantage is the fact it directly increases the Attack Damage from the average 7 to a significant 10 in its highest level (increasing 1.25 per each upgrade).

Its only drawback is that it does not have any flashy abilities and is incompatible with a few other items. Another notable thing is that its highest level is only achievable by using golden tools and books on the Enchantment Table.

1. Unbreaking

Unbreaking is like a better version of Mending, as it adds a chance that your usage won’t decrease the durability of your sword, and the stats behind that chance increase with each upgrade.

It does not make your swords invincible and they will still be damaged, but it greatly prolongs how much you can use them and unlike Mending, it won’t require you to farm a lot of XP orbs to earn durability.

FYI — You can also smite your weapons for higher damages.
