Pokémon GO Mewtwo Guide: Best Movesets, Counters, Stats & More

Mewtwo was the original legendary Pokemon that everyone in the Pokemon fandom went crazy over to catch in the main series games. So it was apparent when Pokemon GO launched, players were eager to get their hands on their favorite gen 1 legendary Pokemon, aka Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is a powerful Pokemon in the game as it is legendary. Though it’s an awesome Pokemon to have on any team, capturing one won’t be easy. You’ll probably have to go to raid battle if you want to get it.

With the legendary status comes a legendary rarity which you’ll have to find a way around.

Mewtwo was a Pokemon created in a lab by the evil team rocket’s scientists. The organization caused much pain and misery to Mewtwo, who finally escaped from his creators’ clutches. It was really unsure about his existence in this world.

Hence he has been portrayed as a misguided anti-hero many times in movies.

Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Pokemon that gives him access to many awesome moves that you can spam in a battle to get the upper hand. But having a Mewtwo isn’t enough; you need to understand how to use it and what movesets are the most effective.

Pokemon Mewtwo Base Stats

Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokemon, and due to its typing, it is weak against dark, bug, and ghost-type moves.

Though it is weak against these sets of moves, it doesn’t mean Mewtwo is weak in any way, every Pokemon has its weakness, and Mewtwo handles its weaknesses pretty nicely. And it even hits harder when some Pokemon which is weak to it shows up.

It has a maximum CP of 4178, which is really good in the game. His base stats are as follows –

  • Attack – 300
  • Defense – 182
  • Stamina – 214
  • Max HP (at level 40) – 180.

The combined total of all his stats is 876, which is a lot compared to other normal pokemon and a lot of legendary Pokemon.

Mewtwo has a height of around 2 meters and weighs 122kg, so it is not that tall. He is mainly found in Tier one raids, and a single player can take him out if he uses Mewtwo’s weakness to his advantage.

Mewtwo Best Movesets

Mewtwo has access to a lot of moves, and most of them are psychic, which suits his typing. But even though most of these moves may look strong on the surface, they just don’t perform against players in a competitive setting most of the time.

So we’d like to suggest a moveset that is considered the most versatile amongst PRO Pokemon GO players. This moveset was used by many PRO players when playing in a competitive tournament, so you can easily beat opponents if you follow it.

Mewtwo Offense Moveset

  • Confusion (15 dps)
  • Psystrike (47 dps).

Mewtwi Defense Moveset

  • Confusion (15 dps)
  • Psystrike (47 dps).

As you can see, the moveset is pretty balanced, both in attack and defense; both utilize the same moves. These moves perform to their full ability when your battling in a PvP setting. The move combination is also the highest DPS movesets for Mewtwo in Pokemon GO.

If you want to stand out, you can also go with other alternative moves such as Psychic and shadow ball. But just remember the above giving moveset will yield the most results, as it has the highest combined DPS.

Now that we know what works for Mewtwo, let’s take a look at what Mewtwo’s weaknesses and strengths are. If you go against  Pokemon that posses the ability to one hit your Mewtwo, your moveset won’t matter a lot.

Mewtwo Strengths and Weakness

As mentioned above in the article, Mewtwo is weak against Dark, Ghost, and Bug types, so steer clear away from them if they show up. Even if they are not as powerful as you Mewtwo, their moves might cause decent damage, which you don’t want.

Mewtwo is vulnerable to bugs, dark, and ghosts; all three will deal 160% damage to your pokemon. That is just an insane percentage; if you get hit by a decent enough move, you’ll be finished. But as it has weaknesses, it also has its strengths.

Mewtwo is resistant to Fighting and Psychic-type Pokemon and can deal 63% damage to them. So if these types show up against you can one-hit KO them if you play your moves right.

Remember, even if you have a decent advantage over your opponent typing-wise, know that if you don’t utilize your shield correctly, you might lose, even after the edge.

Many players use shields against strong pokemon; at times like these, it is best to let them run out of their shield rather than doing something abrasive.

Best Mewtwo counters

Best Mewtwo counters

Mewtwo is a force to be reckoned with, so if you want to counter it, you’ll need an equally effective Pokemon. Fortunately, we have a ton of them. Gengar, Rayquaza, Scizor, Tyranitar, absol, houndoom, Dragonite, pinsir, and Mewtwo.

Wrapping It Up

Mewtwo is one of the best Psychic-type Pokemon of all time, and it has been a force to weaken within almost every Pokemon main series game. Even in Pokemon GO, Mewtwo is regarded as one of the most fierce Pokemon to go against.

Thanks to its excellent design and back story, many have a staunch fan following in the Pokemon fandom, which makes fans love it even more. Mewtwo has seen a lot of special treatment in the form of individual movies. It also played a significant role in the Pokemon live-action movies.

Though Mewtwo is weak against some pokemon types, those types are scarce. Not many people have a ghost or bug-type pokemon in their party, and even if they are, you can just use your shields when they try to attack with effective moves.

The moveset suggested in this guide is the best for Mewtwo and should be used in almost every situation. And if your feel bored using the same moveset, you can always experiment with other moves.

Also, if you get bored of using Mewtwo too often in a battle, there is an armored version that is even more badass. The armored version has better stats and is bulkier, so it can take more hits. Catching them will be a tedious task if you’re a beginner.
