Is Stardew Valley Cross-Platform? (PS4, Switch, PS5, XBOX)

is stardew valley cross platform?

Stardew Valley is a game that no one saw coming, but once it did it quickly made its way onto every top 10 list of simulation games due to how much passion it had from the developer.

It did not just receive success as a game, it redefined the simulation genre and breathed new life into it as games like Harvest Moon were slowly losing their popularity.

While the game originally did not launch with multiplayer, the feature was added to it thanks to fan demand. With a new update to the game, the developer added the ability to play the game with 3 other people, as well as more content in every single aspect of the game too.

As usual, when there’s multiplayer, there are people wanting to play the game with their friends irrespective of what platform that they’re on. After all, 2021 is the year of cross-play and no one wants to buy a new console just to be able to play online with their friends and family.

So, the million-dollar question arises: does Stardew Valley have cross-platform multiplayer or not? Let’s get right to the answer!

Stardew Valley Cross-Play Explained

If you already know what cross-play means and are just here to see whether Stardew Valley has cross-platform multiplayer or not – move on to the next segment for the answer! But if you don’t know what these cross capabilities mean for your video games, then let’s take a moment to explain the concept.

Video games have three different types of cross features. The one that you hear about most commonly is cross-play, which means that any gamer can play online with their friends regardless of what platforms that they’re on.

For example, someone on a PlayStation 4 should be able to play online multiplayer with someone on a PC or an Xbox One. This is not a feature every game has, but it is more common than ever today and many games are implementing it – as long as the players are on the latest version of the game.

The second type is cross-progression which is very straightforward. It means that a player can have the same progress in two or more versions of the game.

For example, if you reach level 80 in a game on a PC and then log your account in on a PlayStation 4 – you should be able to continue off of where you left rather than have to start over from 0.

Lastly, we have the cross-generation feature which means that two or more consoles on the same brand can play with each other. For example, someone on a PlayStation 4 can play with someone on a PlayStation 5, but not with a PC or Xbox player.

With these definitions out of the way, let’s jump right into the main question and its answer!

It also does not feature cross-progression capabilities as all of your progress will remain on the one platform that you played it on. The closest thing the game has to cross-play in between every version of the game on computers, such as macOS, Linux, PC – which includes Steam and GoG being cross-play with each other.

The game does vaguely have cross-generation multiplayer as you can run the PS4 and Xbox One versions on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.

There is no confirmation that Stardew Valley will ever receive cross-play multiplayer, but the game’s sole developer Eric Barone has stated that he does look into the feature and considers adding it someday if possible.
