How to breakaway In MK11

Most people don’t know that some of the functions in the new MK11, even playable characters like Frost are actually rebranded and improved on from the previous version of the game, Mortal Kombat X, XL that is.

If you thought breaking away was new then certainly you didn’t play MK X, or at least held, R2 or tapped it rapidly while you’re being pounded away in a Kombo to trigger the BREAKER command, of course you’ll have to have meters for that to happen.

Well, Breaker is now tagged break away in MK11 and in this guide we’ll show you how to quickly breakaway when under attack in MK11.

Careful When Breaking Away In MK11

A lot of things are changed in MK11 and that does not exclude things like breaking away.

In MK X, you could just do that and get away but in MK11, that’s not always the case. Well for starters to breakaway from an attack in MK11, you need to have you two full defensive meters and be careful who you use it against as you could still be punished for doing that.

For example when playing against an experienced player using Johnny cage, if you break away from a combo, they could still catch you with the Pissed-off special move and even deal more damage, Liu Kang could do that too with his nunchaku command grab, the Kusari slam.

One of the most annoying is Kitana’s ground war where she charges you with her butt, that move not only breaks the breakaway armor, it also induces a crushing blow and that’s a lot of damage.

Joker also has an armor breaker and a couple of others, so be careful.

It also leaves you defenseless for example when you need to rollaway, that requires a defensive bar.

How to Breakaway In MK11

It’s quite easy. In the middle of a kombo, just hold the R2 button and tap the down direction to force a breakaway.

So to be more clear, Breaking away in Mortal Kombat is the input command R2+⬇️ and it requires your two defensive meters.

And that’s it you’re good to go. Unlike giving your opponent mercy, where no bar is needed, breaking away is a huge price to pay to stop an attack but in most cases, it’s worth it.
