Final Fantasy XIV is a surprising hit that continues to grow bigger in time despite being a spin-off of an otherwise single-player franchise.
While the first rendition of the game failed to please gamers, the revision has been a substantial success and is widely regarded as one of the best MMORPGs of our time.
The game has received many different updates and expansions – which naturally add a lot of new features every time.
One such feature is the ‘Mentor’ system which was added during the Heavensward event and it acts as an in-game lobby for novice players who can speak with more experienced enthusiasts of Final Fantasy XIV and learn more about the game.
Not only that but there’s an additional reward attached too such as being able to participate in Mentor Roulette, including an amazing 2-seater mount.
It can be difficult to figure out how you can become a mentor if you’re new to the game, so we’ve created a thorough guide of the steps that you need to take to become a mentor in Final Fantasy 14. So, let’s get started!
Types of Final Fantasy XIV Mentors
An interesting thing to note about Final Fantasy 14 Mentors is the fact that there are two types of them.
- PvE Mentor: The first one is the PvE Mentor which has its own requirements to be completed and allows you to be recognized for your combat capabilities.
- Trade Mentor: The second one is the Trade Mentor who is known for their ability to find and collect collectibles, among other things. This also comes with its own list of requirements, which eventually allows you to become a Mentor.
Final Fantasy XIV Mentor Requirements
Whether you want to be a PvE Mentor or a Trade Mentor, you will need to complete a certain set of requirements that will allow you to gain the title.
They’re both based on the theme of their names, as one is about proving yourself in combat and the other one is about proving yourself in collectibles and craft. You can, of course, do both if you want and get the label for that too.
Trade Mentor Requirements
- Gather or catch 300 collectible items
- Manually craft 100 collectibles
- Reach level 80 in any Disciple of the Land
- Reach level 80 in any Disciple of the Hand.
PvE Mentor Requirements
PvE means Player vs Enemy, so the requirements are all about fighting the game’s AI-controlled enemies.
- Complete any level 80 tank role quest
- Complete any level 80 healer role quest
- Complete any level 80 DPS role quest
- Complete 1,500 raids, dungeons, or trials
- Receive 1,000 player commendations.
As you can see, there’s a consistency in level 80 in the requirements for both PvE and Trade Mentor variations, so that’s something you should work on even if you don’t want to be a Mentor right now so that it’s easier later.
There’s a small difference between the icon you’d get with the crown and that’s based on whether you become a Mentor by completing the tank, healer, or DPS role quest.
Registering as a Mentor in Final Fantasy XIV
The first thing you have to do is to meet the requirements of either the PvE Mentor or the Trade Mentor.
You can also complete both of them to be recognized for both your trade and combat capabilities at the same time, but that’s completely up to the player and if they’re willing to put in the effort when a single list of tasks will still make them a relevant Mentor too.
Once you’re ready to go, it’s time to register yourself as a Mentor. To do that, you need to speak to the Smith in any of the locations where the character can be visited, and here’s a list of the locations you can usually try your luck in:
- New Grindania (X: 11, Y: 13)
- Central Shroud (X: 10, Y: 22)
- Ul’dah – Steps of Nald (X: 11.8, Y: 9)
- Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X: 11, Y: 11)
- South Shroud (X: 19, Y: 19)
- Central Shroud Alternative (X: 19, Y: 28)
- Eastern Thanalan (X: 14, Y: 30)
- Western La Noscea (X: 28, Y: 24)
- Western Thanalan (X: 27, Y: 16).
Once you visit the designated places and talk to Smith, you should become a Mentor and you can finally do the things that are exclusive to them, or just show off your crown.
If you were Mentor prior to the Shadowbringers event and didn’t play the game in a while, you will need to talk to a Smith NPC again to regain your title without any extra effort.
