When you hear water-type Pokemon, whether you’re a fan of the franchise or just someone who knows a bit about it – the first thought in your mind is the good old Magikarp. However, like other elemental types – there are many extremely strong contenders that fall under the Water-type of Pokemon too.
There’s a great amount of diversity between the hundreds of Pokemon that we have and this even counts for those that come under the same type. And that is further broken down by the fact some Pokemon may be weaker than the rest at the same stage of life, but its evolved form might trump its comparisons when you reach that point.
And of course, there are even hybrid types that are combinations of different animals and elements, such as mixtures of water, grass, wind, and more. Naturally, it can be very time-consuming to figure out who the best water-type Pokemon are – so we’ve created a handy list to save you time.

10. Clawitzer
Clawitzer is one of the best Pokemon introduced in the Pokemon X series, and has very impressive Defense and Sp. Defense statistics. Its speed is a bit low, but its durability and Sp. Attack stats give it a great advantage over most of the other options, starting at 124.
Once you manage to get a hold of it and learn some great moves – it becomes one of the most high-damaging Water type Pokemon that you can get your hands on!
9. Starmie
Starmie is a Pokemon that almost everyone has seen – even if they don’t know its name at the time. It has a mixture of Water and Psychic types which gives it double the potential of the attacks it can inflict on its opponents. While Psychic types generally have lower stats in the Defense department, thankfully that is not the case with Starmie.
And if you’re not satisfied with some of the other aspects that it has – its speed alone makes it a great Pokemon to have on your team considering how fast it goes.
8. Lapras
Lapras is a well-known Pokemon that has been relevant in both video games and the anime series and a fan favorite of many. It’s a dual-type Pokemon that has Water and Ice properties and was introduced as early as Generation 1.
While it’s generally pretty useful early on in the games, it did not have any forms that it could evolve into. That thankfully changed as soon as the Gigantamax forms started being a thing – and it became one of the strongest Water-type Pokemon that you can find.
7. Wailord
Wailord is what you call an ‘absolute unit’. The Pokemon has the shape of a whale and weighs around 877 pounds alone – making it one of the largest and heaviest Pokemon in existence.
As you would expect from its size and appearance, it’s one of the strongest Water type Pokemon that you can obtain and deal a great amount of damage to its opponents if played right.
6. Kyogre
Kyogre has a deep lore that sets it up as one of the most interesting Pokemon in the franchise, since a cult in the Hoenn region even worships it as a God. While it’s certainly not a God in terms of gameplay – it packs a major punch thanks to extremely effective moves such as Hydro Pump to name one.
One of the best things about it is that it’s very adaptive, which allows it to learn new moves from several other types. This gives it options even beyond its main Water type and it’s even immune to fire once the enchantment statistics are sharpened out by the player. It’s easily one of the best Pokemon in general and offers a great bargain to fans of the Water type as a whole.
5. Suicune
Suicune is a Pokemon hard to catch – but with such a mysterious yet majestic appearance, it’s hard to resist the temptation to give it a try. It has great statistics in almost every department, such as its Attack, Sp. Attack, and Defense being top-of-the-line.
And if its usefulness wasn’t enough, it even has a pretty cool storyline with tons of lore that you can catch up on within different Pokemon media. So, it ticks every box one might have as a requirement for the perfect Water type Pokemon to use.
4. Greninja
Greninja is more of a recent addition to the roster but immediately became very popular – to the point you might have even seen its name before you saw what it looks like. While it can be a bit of a hassle to evolve Frogadier to this point, this final form is more than worth all of your efforts due to how cool it looks and its generous stats.
Something that you don’t see often is having a high number of Attacks and Sp. Attack stats but still having a great speed. But when a character is called Greninja, of course, he’s going to be fast! And thus, it becomes a very great candidate to use in Water-type Pokemon.
3. Blastoise
Blastoise is one of the earliest Pokemon known to mankind and has been featured several times over the course of the franchise. Starting as a Squirtle, which is a pretty good Pokemon to have in the early gameplay of most games in the series – it eventually evolves into Wartortle, and then finally Blastoise.
While it already has very good stats at Blastoise in almost every department, it can even be further evolved into Mega Blastoise and the more recent Gigantamax forms. If there was a list of ‘essential’ Pokemon to have by your side, then this one’s an important guy to keep for your Water type needs.
2. Swampert
You must remember Swampert from the times you kept getting defeated by random challengers in Pokemon because your Pokemon weren’t strong enough yet. It has some of the highest stats that you can find in a Water type Pokemon and that’s because of the fact it can even be immune to electric moves.
Even in the starting phases, its Health, Attack, and Defense stats are pretty good and the speed isn’t that bad either. And any weaknesses that it has, it knows how to counter them and that is thanks to the fact it has the ability to learn several Ice type moves, which are super helpful against different types of attacks.
It’s an important Pokemon for the franchise and a great one to play as – and it even has a Mega form if you’re willing to put in the effort.
1. Gyarados
No matter how many generations of Pokemon pass, whether it’s the anime or the video games – Magikarp is always the joke of the town and mostly discarded by players due to its lack of usefulness and the infamous ‘Splash’ move not causing any damage to anyone at all.
However, all of this changes when you finally evolve it to a Gyarados and then it becomes a scarily strong mixture of Water and Flying type Pokemon that can even be evolved into a Mega form.
Its Attack stat sits at a whopping 125 at base and it has a pretty good Health, Defense, Sp. Defense, and Speed ratio too. You can’t ever go wrong with this Pokemon and if you have the patience for dealing with evolving a Makigarp – there’s no reason that you should miss out on this guy for.
