Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most anticipated RPGs of this year, and it has lived up to all the expectations that fans had for it. Although the game is incredibly fun as a single-player experience, it’s undeniable that playing it with your friends in co-op multiplayer is amazing too.
Your choices make a huge difference in the game, and so do things like which class you choose to play with. And trying all these different things with your friends makes things very exciting. Especially since you may not always agree to everything and try different approaches.
When a game features such a well-made online experience, it’s only natural that people want to be able to enjoy it with their friends regardless of what platform their friends are on. After all, you shouldn’t be forced to buy the same hardware just to be able to play with the people you know in 2023.
So, let’s talk about the big question. Does Baldur’s Gate 3 have cross-platform multiplayer or not? Let’s take a look at the official sources and answer this immediately!
Baldur’s Gate 3 Cross-Play Explained
If you’re unaware of what cross-platform is, let’s take a moment to explain the concept of cross features in video games. Those who already know what cross-play and other similar things are – just scroll down to the next part of this guide for the answer to if Baldur’s Gate 3 is cross-play or not!
There are three cross features in video games.
The first one is cross-play, which means the ability to enjoy online multiplayer with your friends on any console (or PC) platform without needing to buy the same hardware. A quick example can be that someone on an Xbox can play a game with their friends on a PS4 if the game has cross-play.
The second is cross-generation, which lets you play across two generations of the same console. For example, someone on a PS5 can play with someone on a PS4 – but not with someone on an Xbox.
The third one is cross-progression, which refers to the ability to have the same progress on multiple platforms. For example, if you reach level 40 in a game or have a save file on a PS4 – you will be able to have the same progress on a PC if you log into your account there.
Now that our explanation is complete, let’s find out if Baldur’s Gate 3 has cross-play or not.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 Cross-Play?
Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on the PC platform. In September, Baldur’s Gate 3 will come out on the PlayStation 5 and macOS. And sometime in the next few months, the game will come out on the Xbox Series X/S too.
Unfortunately, Baldur’s Gate 3 does not have cross-platform multiplayer. Every person who owns the game is limited to their own platform and cannot play online with anyone who is using a different piece of hardware.
There is no reason given for this at the moment and we also don’t know if Larian Studios will add cross-platform to the game in the future either. Though it’s certainly a possibility.
Does Baldur’s Gate 3 feature cross-progression?
Yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 features cross-platform progression. If you own the game on both a PC and a PlayStation 5, you will be able to move your save file across the two platforms. The only catch is that you’ll need to create a Larian Studios account to use this feature.
When the Xbox port comes out, you can safely expect that to feature cross-progression too.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 coming to the Nintendo Switch?
No, there are currently no plans of porting Baldur’s Gate 3 to the Nintendo Switch. And it might be impossible to do that too, since it’s a game that demands powerful hardware. Baldur’s Gate 3 might get a Cloud-based release on the handheld console though.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 Cross-Platform between PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X?
No, Baldur’s Gate does not feature cross-play between any platforms.
Does Baldur’s Gate 3 feature split-screen multiplayer?
Yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 features split-screen multiplayer on both the PC and PlayStation 5 versions of the game. The Xbox Series X version will too, though the developers admit that they’re having trouble implementing it on that platform and that is one of the reasons why its release might get delayed to 2024.
